Sacred Refuge - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Sacred Refuge" Colored Pencil The landscape is not merely something I see; it is a means of revealing an inner, spiritual reality. I begin with nature, but I do not attempt to reproduce it literally. Instead, I use the landscape as raw material for constructing a world shaped by memory, symbolism, color, and emotion. In this drawing, the sacred refuge appears set apart as a place of worship - a creation of the spirit characterized by holiness, peace, and purity of heart. My approach is influenced by Les Nabis , who understood a work of art not simply as an imitation of the visible world but as a composed surface of color, pattern, and feeling. Like them, I am interested in flattening space, intensifying color, and allowing decorative design to carry emotional and religious meaning. The example of Sérusier’s The Talisman reinforces my belief that an artist need not imitate the landscape exactly. Nature can become the starting point for a personal language of color, pattern, ...

Self-Portrait with Hat - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Self-Portrait with Hat" Colored Pencil This self-portrait is not meant to be a photographic likeness or a complete psychological profile. This drawing is a careful study in contrast while also breaking some academic rules. COLOR SCHEME - An obvious contradiction is the complementary color scheme comprised of yellow-orange and blue-violet. When placed side-by-side, these two colors actually enhance each other’s vibrancy. VALUE RANGE - Another strong disparity is found in the wide value range. Just as light emerges from darkness, the murky-blue background is a somber foil at odds with the pale-yellow face. TEXTURE - Another example of divergence is the different textures on display throughout. Some of the deep shadow areas are burnished smooth while other parts are stippled like pointillism. SHADING - There are a few patches of flat color, especially in the coat and hat, that are contradicted by sleek gradients. The most careful shading is reserved for rendering the facial...

Judy Thinking - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Judy Thinking" Colored Pencil During a moment of meditative silence and quiet contemplation, the artist’s wife is drawn while thinking. This reserved scene evokes a certain melancholy and sense of resignation that betrays the private introspection. Seated in a comfortable brown chair, Judy’s posture is rigid and geometric as her exact contour is faithfully outlined with black pencil. The pensive mood is achieved through the static composition and muted color palette that consists of mostly browns and grays. She wears charcoal leggings and a turquoise top that contrasts sharply with the rest of the warm hues. The clothing is described with some basic shading and blocks of solid shadows. Like a ghostly apparition, the skin tones are pale and delicate, exuding an aura of something spiritual. Layers of yellow are defined by deep, dark shadows that give her hair a sculptural quality. Adorned with golden jewelry, her arms are slightly distorted and shaded in a matter-of-fact manne...

Mountain Wilderness Utah - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Mountain Wilderness Utah" Colored Pencil The Timpanogos Wilderness in Utah is a beautiful place to visit during the late fall because of the extraordinary range of vibrant hues. Even the darkest shadows are saturated with greens, blues and violets. The area’s rugged terrain is as varied as the landscape’s color spectrum. The giant peaks are composed of sheer rock and textured with patches of pine trees while the deep valley is a sea of dense underbrush. The scene is a study in startling contrasts because the flaming, wavy grasses are absolutely opposed to the somber, solid mountains. The peaks have a certain architectural structure whereas the field flows. This drawing is not about capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, it is searching for something more eternal and monumental. There is no aerial perspective here as the space is intentionally compressed. As the expanse of sky descends, it gradually becomes more yellow because particles from the earth below m...

Christmas Day - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Christmas Day" Colored Pencil It’s a melancholy Christmas Day morning and the sullen mood is intensified by the murky atmosphere. The winter weather is chilly and bleak with a sharp breeze blowing cold air, stinging my face. Moving at a sluggish pace, I trudge along the water’s purple edge as the shallow, green creek snakes its way through the desolate pasture. There’s no snow on the ground which is unusual for this time of the year. The desolate, golden grassland is dusted with a layer of dirty brown and smudged over a rugged texture typical of this hard land. Like a pink mirage, a reclusive range of sand hills sulks silently in the distance. The barren plain supports the skeletal frames of a few gnarled trees whose red coloring is shaded with orange and blue. The eerie woodland is dark and soulless invoking a heightened sense of loneliness. Reflecting on the pain of loss, I stare upwards where a bulky, gray cloud obscures the brooding, blue sky. In that moment I be...

Escalante Valley - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Escalante Valley - Colored Pencil Drawing" The Escalante Valley in Utah is a lonely arroyo hewn by a serpentine river that in the late fall can be easily forded in order to gain access to a labyrinth of arches, grottos and hidden glades. Unfamiliar with such a preternatural territory, it is a strange and mystical wilderness. Rising from a field of fiery grasses, the ancient rock formations tower above the desert floor, carving out a rugged skyline. The primordial beauty is enhanced by an explosion of autumn hues that can only be expressed with color from across the entire palette. The reddish buttes are sculpted from a progression of steep tiers and scarred by vertical striations. While defining the extraordinary shapes, the distinct shadows stay warm except for the deepest that trend towards purple. The desert ramparts are an exceptionally rugged borderland concealing the remote river chasm. Running along the base of the sheer walls, raw galleries preserve magnificent petro...

Red Mountain Range - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Red Mountain Range" Colored Pencil The Red Mountain Range sweeps southward across desolate ranch land where a barren tree sets the scale. It’s sunrise and the blue light has been scattered so crimson is the only color permeating the all-powerful peaks. The snow-covered summits are still mostly in shade but the first highlights melt into a sun-bleached sky.  The rugged chain is architectural in form as the violet shadows delineate the exciting shapes. The remarkable geometry is drawn into the bottom lands where the snowy pastures are divided by horizontal bands of ochre agriculture. The dark foreground is a rough-hewn hedge of tall grass and sagebrush. Visiting this site has inspired an artistic experiment about how best to express the transcendent nature of these mystical mountains. The series has come to an end but I’m not sure a satisfying conclusion has been achieved so further investigation may be required in the future.

Shining Mountains - Colored Pencil Drawing

Image
"Shining Mountains" Colored Pencil It’s late fall as first light seeps across the Great Divide and floods into the Blue River Valley, illuminating a celestial kingdom. Rising out of this divine realm, the Shining Mountains sparkle like jewels and their jagged profile serrates a docile sky. The ethereal incandescence reveals a royal tapestry of woven colors that conveys a spiritual loftiness unique to one of Colorado’s most pristine wilderness areas. The golden peaks are modeled by a jigsaw of sharp-edged shadows of the purest violet-blue. In the field, a barren aspen grove and a few dark trees are scattered remnants of autumn’s last breath. The bronze meadow sits somberly below snow-dusted summits that glimmer with multi-facets of hope. This merciful period of reflection offers precious time to prepare for the difficulties that lay ahead. The melancholy season’s cold air blows with indifference forcing the high country inhabitants to respond with unyielding perseve...

Above Tree Line - Something Spiritual

Image
Snowy peaks from above tree line Most of the summer was spent grounded in Colorado’s graceful foothills, a vibrant ecosystem bursting with activity. The forest was flush with lots of wildlife while the trails were packed with tons of tourists. Things got considerably lower during a visit to the Pacific Ocean where the crowded West Coast descended to the depths of sea level. There, the sizzling California sun scorched the skin but excess oxygen filled the lungs. Back home, along with the cool, autumn breeze came a yearning to climb into thin air. There’s something spiritual about getting above tree line that opens your heart and clears your mind. You’re released from the stifling clutter of the complicated lowlands and gifted priceless time in a wide open space. It’s a simplified landscape composed from the basic ingredients of earth, rock and sky. It’s a special domain with sparse vegetation and few inhabitants where only the most tenacious survive. The sound of silence is...
